On the occasion of the periodic exhibition "The castle of Velika", an international scientific conference is organized in the Diachronic Museum of Larissa with subject "Justinian Fortifications". In this period, the Byzantine Empire reach the borders of the older Roman State and successfully defends its territories by implementing a vast number of fortifications in various locations. The Mediterranean becomes for the last time a Byzantine “lake”, helping the trade from Spain to the Black Sea.

Twelve scientists from domestic and international universities, research centers and antiquities ephorates present their studies about fortifications and castles of the 6th cent. A.D. in Thessaly, Macedonia, Skopje, Serbia and Romania, analyzing this important period.

The participants will be hosted by the municipality of Agia in the coast line of Larissa, an area that played an important role in the Justinian period.

Diachronic Museum of Larissa, Friday 5 May, 9:00a.m., free entrance

The conference is organized by Antiquities Ephorate of Larissa in cooperation with the History and Archaeology Department of the University of Thessaly and the Municipality of Agia.
