The Antiquities Ephorate of Larissa and the Municipality of Agia organize an archaeological presentation of the recent findings at the Castle of Velika and the prospect for further research on the site. In the recent two years the maintenance of antiquities, which had been revealed during the past two years, has progressed and the majority of the objects have been presented in the Spring, in the Diachronic Museum of Larissa.
The scientific group, supervised by Mrs Stavroula Sdrolia and Mr Ioannis Varalis –Professor of the University of Thessaly- are preparing the guide for the exhibition, the site presentation in greek as well in international conventions, in which the importance of the castle in the Justinian period is emphasized.
At the same time, the role of the wider area during the classical period is being explored, when the most important city was Melivia, based on certain findings which came up at the Byzantine sections. Mrs Stamatopoulou -Associate Professor at Oxford University- refered to this matter, as she is studying the position of Melivia in the network of settlements in Northern Magnesia along with the city’s commercial and financial relationships with the Aegean and Macedonia.
The presentation will be held in the theatre Thalassa at Platania of Velika on Friday, 25th August 2017 at 8p.m.
