Mosaic before conservation
Mosaic after conservation

The conservation laboratory of mosaics of the Diachronic Museum operates since 2010. It is equipped with new technical means for the conservation of mosaic findings from excavations, dating from the Roman to the Byzantine period.

The laboratory takes care of issues related to the elaboration and application of studies on mosaic conservation, preventive conservation and recording of open air mosaics as well as interventional conservation.

The interventional conservation involves the removal of mosaic from walls or floors with a view to replacing or exhibiting them, the fixation of the tesserae and the bedding, the mechanical as well as the chemical cleaning of the pebbles, the substitution of the rotten under-layers and the aesthetic presentation of the mosaic.
